The David Nutter Ford Used Car rally team has traveled to South Australia to take on the giants at the Australian Rally Championships.
A lack of Victorian rounds due to road damage from recent big rains, with the most recent event being cancelled, and a lack of practice, encouraged the team to enter the South Australian round of the Australian Rally Championships.
After some great preparation in the David Nutter Ford Used Cars workshop, and the Subaru Service and Parts division, the Rally Car was in fine condition.
Driver David Nutter and Co-Driver Catherine Taylor were seeded 23rd out of 70 starters and came 11th on the first Special Stage which was the asphalt spectator stage at the show grounds in Angaston.
In the second run of the stage David had a spectacular spin on the asphalt leaving lots of smoke and rubber which had the huge crowd cheering and cameras flashing under the lights at the Angeston ground. David and Catherine ended up 26th on that run due to the lost time, and positioned 23rd overall.
The roads the next day were fairly challenging with lots of blind jumps over crests and wide open roads with huge spectator crowds spread throughout the forests.
The Pine Forest area attracted a huge crowd, especially around an area called "Island in the Storm", where the cars pass a corner several times from 2 different directions. There was a lot of action, excitement and dust all through out the day.
David and 'The Cat' had 'clawed' their way to 19th out of the huge field when a failed oil pump and a turbo charger conspired to cook the engine and to bring the car to a halt after 'smoking' through the 'Island in the Storm'. Items beyond the control of the magnificent David Nutter Ford service crew brought the campaign to an abrupt end and the crew became spectators for the rest of weekend.
The Winners of the event were Simon Evans with Sue Evens from Pakenham, who also placed first in the Australian rally championship year to date. Eli Evans with Chris Murphy from Pakenham also competed in the event and were coming 8th at the time of the retirement of the DNFUCrt crew.
The noticeable achievements of the Evans and Evans crew the, Evans and Murphy crew and the Nutter with Taylor crew can be traced directly to the activity with local car club the Pakenham Auto Club ,which until recently had a track which encouraged newer members to the sport to learn how to drive professionally on loose surfaces.
The Pakenham Club is now currently low on new young members due to the lack of a current track and they are looking forward to the new track in the area soon.
David's spare engine is nearing completion and ready to fit in the car, and the 'cooked 'one is well under way to recovery.
The event had great photographic coverage from Brendan Brown and more photos are available at ozrally.com.au .
The crew look forward to competing in the next Victorian event - the Akademos, which will be on the weekend of the 13th and 14th of October near Alexandra and Thornton.
David & Cat were competing against the Ford Factory Fiesta Team in the S.A.
